KPMG: “Transformational adjustment” coming to alternative investment industry

Few would disagree that the Madoff fiasco was to the hedge fund industry as the iceberg was to the Titanic – an unanticipated event that forever changed the course of history.  While several major investors sank after Madoff ripped a hole their starboard hull, successive investors have learned from the tragedy.

Curiously, KPMG chose an iceberg motif for its new report on “The Future of Alternative Investments“.  It’s unclear whether the firm is suggesting that the alternative investment industry is melting, that it faces a treacherous route ahead during which it must dodge more icebergs, or whether 90% of the alternative investment industry remains hidden below the waterline.  In any event, the survey of 200 managers, investors and administrators – completed only weeks ago – makes for interesting reading.
