Recent Forbes’ hedge fund article latest in a proud lineage this week contains a rather familiar-sounding story called “Build your own hedge fund“.  We were stuck by a sense of deja vu upon reading the title of this story.  Was the date wrong on the story?  Didn’t we read this piece last year…and the year before…and the year before that?

It turns out that the DIY hedge fund shtick has been bouncing around for several years.  Building your own hedge fund seems to resonate with the general public.  After all, there’s nothing like thumbing your nose at the rich hedge fund managers and keeping all those fees for yourself.

Here are a few of the predecessors to this Forbes article (note the family resemblance):

    …and don’t forget worth magazine….
“Grow Your Own Hedge Funds. With hedge fund fees taking a big chunk out of investors’ returns, investment … products that backers say can duplicate a hedge-fund strategy without the fees involved in actually investing in a fund. July 2007.”
